22 DRAGON HUNTERS

I reached over from Knicker's back and snatched the poster off the tree where it was nailed. This was one of over a dozen I had removed today. They were dragon bounty posters. William had them distributed after Farloft and James escaped by a matter of moments almost two months ago.

William was bent on revenge. He was a man obsessed.

In the week after the dragons took flight, Larkin and I watched William grow angrier with each passing day. Our intention had been to wait until the King calmed a bit and then confess to what we all had done for the preservation of his kingdom. However, it did not appear as though that calm would ever come. Larkin and I decided to tell him of our plan and the assistance the dragons had given us in executing it.

William was enraged. He felt betrayed. He accused us of treason. Larkin was ordered to confine herself to her rooms in the tower. William could not afford to lock up his only healer so he banished me from the castle and would allow me to return only on his command.

He did not agree with our motivation or tactics. He still did not see the danger of befriending King Aldrich and letting him join his family line with William's.

William appealed to King Aldrich for his assistance in hunting down the dragons. Aldrich sent his three best dragon hunters, a deadly looking crew of two men and a woman. I watched through my mirror which was still linked to the gem in William's crown. Larkin and I had not told the King about that deception. He really had not given us the chance.

The dragon hunters looked well-seasoned and strong. They arrived with a pack animal laden with equipment. They assured the King they always got their prey. They came and went in a day. That was over a month ago.

Prior to their leaving, they arranged with the King to have the scribes make and distributed the posters.

Father Pry, the lead scribe, asked me what he should do. He helped me evacuate my ill patients the night of the fire. He was in on the plan. He didn't want to bring any harm to Farloft or James, but it had been by order of the King that the posters were commissioned. I told him to do as he was told and spent part of my time each day trying to remove the posters that were posted furthest from the village. I hoped no one locally would take the King up on his bounty offer.

I had rounds to make in the village. I folded the poster up and put it in my bag.

The village and the villagers were making a quick recovery. The King demoted Haben when he found out he was in on our deception. The new head of the guard was a young man named Elkin. He favored the King's view that all dragons should be killed.

Haben turned his energy toward rebuilding the village.
